Together for Peace, On International Peace Day 2017

International Peace Day, also popularly known as World Peace Day is an annual festival observed by 193 member nations of UN. The day is focused on commemorating and strengthening peace within the nation and amongst people. This year it was observed on21st September with the theme “Together global campaign”, which aims to achieve respect, safety, and dignity for all.”

The celebrations had started 100 days prior to the peace day with the launch of’The PeaceCrane Project’. In the project,  1000 cranes from students from Asia, Africa, and other parts of the world collected cranes and displayed in the irrespective venues for World Peace. Like every year, a bell was rung in UN headquarters(New York) in honor of the day.

The year 2017 hasn’t been good for world peace and there has been a surge in a number of civilian casualties. The total number of deaths in the Syrian war has gone past 4,80,000, hundreds of Rohingya refugees are killed every day in Myanmar, and in Afghanistan, the number of deaths amongst civilians has increased by 40 % in first six months. And above all, Martial law (emergency) has been declared in Philipinnes due to the war situation, by President, Rodrigo Duterte.

The world is yet to see a better day, of peace, and we hope for better times ahead.
