Mesmerising Elephanta Experience

Ten nautical miles away from the busy city of Mumbai lie the enigmatic Island of Elephanta.  Water bodies tend to have a soothing effect on me and but not this time. The heat and the moisture made the atmosphere in the boat extremely oppressive. I was more troubled by the number of food packets, plastics and coconut shells which went floating past. However, we reached the island within forty-five minutes and then took a tram which dropped us nearer to the hill that was the famous abode of Lord Shiva. One look at the gigantic proportions of the temple architecture

Attitudes of Tastes- Kaema Sutra Vs Masala Library

#Comparison Series Kickstarts…. A few days back, while browsing through foodie groups on social media, a post caught my attention. It was asking the patrons of the group as to what do you do when a restaurant serve great food but their service is below any limits to be called good, and goes on to be a bit more of an attitude problem of the restaurant itself. An innocent question that can spark off arguments of many sorts. Do you go back to the erring restaurant for the love of food or not? Or does an act of kindness get

November 16, the day Tendulkar retired, still haunts me

Have you ever feared a roof falling off, only because of sheer sound? Have you ever sensed tears around you in absolute pin drop silence? Reminiscing that date, still gives me Goosebumps. Even today an year later, it’s hard to believe that the man’s journey of 24 years between 22 yards is over. It is said ‘All good things come to an end’, yet as my friend Rohit had said last year, that he thought Sachin would play on forever. How I wish that could have been a reality. It’s still tough to see the game without that man in

An Outsider’s love at First Sight: MUMBAI

As my first day in Mumbai comes to an end, here I am, standing at Mohammed Rafi Chowk showcasing a silent protest against the legendary Rafi sahib’s 1956 song that claimed “Kahin building, kahin traame, kahin motor, kahin mill Milta hain yahaan sab kuch , ek milta nahi DIL Insaan ka nahin kahin naam aur nishaan Zara hat ke, zara bach ke, yeh hai Bombay meri jaan” Translation (Buildings, Trams, Motors and Mills. You get everything here except a HEART People don’t have a name or identity here Keep away, keep safe , This is Bombay my dear) At around

The Black Beauty – 3

Continued from Part 1 and 2 . I brought myself to composure, and controlled my emotions. Maybe I was over thinking. It was possible that Leela and Nauheed were plainly visiting the ancient temple of Yellamma in Saundatti. However it was hard to believe that they were plainly visiting the shrine. Why would they do so? The ancient Devdasi system wherein young girls were dedicated to a life of sanctioned prostitution and their virginity was auctioned in the name of service to the goddess was banned in the 1980s. When I had read the history behind the whole concept I was

The Black Beauty – 2

Followed from Part 1. Nauheed touched my arm, and I was back to Bangalore. She said, “You didn’t answer anything I asked. You don’t remember me?” The innocence was still intact. I told her that it was impossible to forget her. I had drifted for a while to the city that never sleeps. I enquired about how she had reached Bangalore. She said, “I will tell you. Tell me why did you leave the city? You liked it a lot. What happened?” I smiled, and answered, “I found another job here.” She asked, “A better one? I came here for

The Black Beauty – 1

A misty morning in the monsoon, and I stepped out of my apartment to begin my daily commute to work. Becky, the dog, rested peacefully at the stairs bidding me goodbye with her poignant eyes. She looked more tired than usual or was she ill; I didn’t know. I stroked her black hair, and rubbed her forehead before leaving. The murk of the fog that morning shielded the greenery around – holding a silence that can move you. Taz, the dog, emerged from the murk with Aunty Daisy. I stopped by him for our morning love session, and then continued

Toddler Steps: An Indian’s Guide to Toddler Food

TODDLER ALERT!! I have one right now on my feet, trying to chew my clothes. They are such adorable little creatures. Walking around the house like a drunk penguin, smiling and uttering words in alien languages. They just make a working day go by in a breeze, with half the work done, but keeping you doubly tired at that. I sometimes wonder, what the secret behind their energy is. A HEALTHY DIET goes a long way in keeping them active and gaining weight at that. And more so for us in India, where we are blessed with fresh fruits and

Stuffed & Braised Calamari!!

Staying in Mumbai has a definite plus point when it comes to buying fresh sea food. In fact, I feel every non-vegetarian in this island city, and more, should opt for these fresher sources of protein, rather than just sticking to you regular frozen meats. It is much more flavourful, easy and quick to cook, and would be very easily available throughout a sea food market. Sunday is one day of a week or a fortnight that should be dedicated to buying fresh edibles, be it veggies or proteins. One day of planning can actually save many from the regular
