Film: La La Land.
Cast: Ryan Gosling , Emma Stone & John Legend.
Directed by: Damien Chazelle.
Introduction: Ladies & Gentleman, Damien is the one who made whiplash last year. Yes! The same film that was questioned by some, appreciated by the others. What makes this film stand out is the fact that it’s completely different from the director’s previous work. Unlike our folks who love the concept of ctrl c plus ctrl v.
Plot: Two strugglers, one a jazz pianist and the other an actor meet by chance. They keep bumping into each other and fall in love. Ryan is stuck in his roots and love for jazz music, unwilling to change, wants to open a club where jazz and it’s existence is celebrated. Emma wants to be an actor. The two of them influence each others energies and gives them hope to fulfill their aspirations.
Tech spec: I love musicals. There are certain emotions that cannot be expresses merely through words. A Lil bit of humming, slight use of chords or notes only enhance the story telling process. The choreography in the opening act is outstanding.
Actor prepares: For some he is worth drooling for his looks, for many others it’s his body language that does the trick. For me it’s the ‘ease’ in his movements that steals the show. Stone has never been this good. Both of them are actors who have moved out of their comfort zones and essayed their characters to perfection.
After Thought: Indian cinema puts so much emphasis on its music. Good or bad but it’s an integral part of our movies. Yet we don’t have one film that truly is musical .
